We need to introduce ourselves to people in many of our day to day activities such as in a new class at a friend's birthday party or at an international competition

How do you introduce yourself in English

How can you answer questions from your newly-made friends

In the following conversations we will learn some useful expressions

Remember in some cultures certain issues are forbidden so pay extra attention to what Glenn will talk about in Cultural Focus lecture and you will learn more about taboos in other cultures

We should respect the customs and conventions of other countries

Here I would like to show you a personal information table to help you with your self-introduction

You may use the English expressions you have learned in this unit to fill out the table

Joyce: Hi, I’m Dr. Joyce Stavick. I’m head of the English department at the University of North Georgia in the United States.

Marlena Schmidt: 我叫舒丽娜。I’m from Kennesaw, Georgia in the United States, I have one sister and three dogs. I’m a student at the University of North Georgia. My major is international affairs with an Asian connection. I enjoy playing sports like swimming and soccer and underwater basket weaving.

Mark Bonville: 你好，我叫郝村。Hi, I’m Mark Bonville. I come from Fort Bragg, North Carolina.  I like shooting, running, biking, hiking. My major is Chinese. I come from a family of five. I have an older brother, and an old sister. I also have a dog. My brother is a biology major, and my sister is a nursing major. On the weekends, I like to go swimming during the summer. During the winter, I just like to stay inside.

毕飞宇：大家好，我叫毕飞宇。I’m from Georgia in the United States of America. I like music a lot. My major is Chinese. My favorite singer is Mariah Carey. My favorite type of music is doo-wop. I’m also really awesome at DJ music. And I used to do for raves. 

于敏荣：大家好，我叫于敏荣。My English name is Meredith Rouner. I’m from Georgia. My major is art, so most of my hobbies involve art. I like painting and drawing the most. I read a lot as well. My favorite book in America is “Cold Sassy Tree”. Usually on the weekends, I go hiking with my friends, or we go camping if the weather is really nice. If I’m not camping, I usually go home and visit my family.

Ryan McCaughey：你好，我叫孟克海。My name is Ryan. I’m a university student at North Georgia. I’m originally from Norway. I have one cat, one tiger. My family has four people. I have a twin sister. In my free time, I play basketball. I like to play baseball also. I also like to listen to music. I like country music, and rap music. 

Thomas Holman：大家好，我叫胡利明。My English name is Thomas. I’m from America. In my free time, I like to play rugby, hang out with my friends and go camping. I have a family of two brothers and my mother and father. We have a dog. I like to run and exercise. I study international politics.

Cao Zijian: Good morning, can I help you?

Tom: Hi, I’m a teacher from the United Kingdom, and I’m here to teach in the English Summer Camp.

Cao Zijian: Oh, welcome. This is a form for teachers to fill in. Would you mind giving me your surname please?

Tom: My surname is Piachaud.

Cao Zijian: Piachaud, can you spell it for me?

Tom: P-I-A-C-H-A-U-D.

Cao Zijian: Oh, thank you Mr. Piachaud. And your first name is?

Tom: Thomas. T-H-O-M-A-S.

Cao Zijian: Ok, thank you. And we need a form of identification to register the room.

Tom: Ok, I have my identity card.

Cao Zijian: Thank you. Your number is 56688889. And is there a phone number where we can contact you while you’re in Beijing?

Tom: Yes, my mobile number is 18511933581.

Cao Zijian: Ok, thank you, and here’s your card and some materials and your room key for the English Summer Camp. And your room is in Building #16.

Tom: Thank you very much.

Cao Zijian: Later in the afternoon a lot of volunteers will come to have an interview here. Would you like to be an interviewer?

Tom: That sounds great, thank you very much.

Cao Zijian: Thank you.

Tom: Have a good day.

Cao Zijian: Bye

Jason: Hello Owen.

Owen: Hello, How are you doing?

Jason: Great. Jason Ward. Nice to meet you.

Owen: Pleased to meet you. Have a seat.

Jason: Thanks so much.

Owen: So, I see here that you’re an exchange student here at Tsinghua.

Jason: Yes, I’m actually studying at the University of Florida, and I’m a hydraulic engineering student, and I heard Tsinghua had a really great program, so I’ve been studying here for the last year.

Owen: Great, OK. What qualifications or why do you think you would be a good candidate to be at the English Summer Camp?

Jason: Well my friend told me about the English Summer Camp and it sounded like a really great opportunity. One of the reasons I came to Tsinghua was to really practice my Mandarin, and I also want to help, really get to know some Chinese students. I really hope to work for a big company one day, and I think that this experience will really help me learn how to teach and how to talk to people from many different parts of the world. And hopefully, maybe my future company will also allow me to travel as well.

Owen: Sounds good. Besides your studies, do you have any hobbies or interests that might be helpful in the Summer Camp?

Jason: Hobbies… Yeah, I really like music, and Backstreet Boys is one of my favorite bands, and I know a lot of my Tsinghua friends also love Backstreet Boys. I also love reading novels, specifically American novels. I really love Great Expectations and Pride & Prejudice and I’m hoping that my passion for American literature will be very helpful to me in the Camp.

Owen: Sounds great, sounds like you could be a good candidate.

Jason: I hope so. I’m really excited for the experience.

Owen: Great. It’s been great meeting you.

Jason: Great meeting you as well. Thank you.
