• considers the reader,and what she/he needs to know to understand the paper

Introductions, of course, are what give your reader a first impression. Think of meeting a new person for the first time. Those first few moments are important to the impression we make. It is the same with writing: the first paragraph or two creates a first impression for your reader and gives her or him a reason to keep reading.

Conclusions are also important. They remind the readers of your argument, and give them something to consider in their own thinking. Again, think about meeting a new person. When it's time to say goodbye, it's best not just to walk away without saying something to close your meeting and make the person look forward to seeing you again. Similarly, your conclusion should leave your reader with a good impression.
